This program invites audiences on a journey through centuries of chamber music, from the ceremonial brilliance of early brass traditions to the expressive depth of the modern string quartet. The first half features vibrant works by Scheidt, Susato, Maurer, and Bach, showcasing the warmth, brilliance, and celebratory character that have long defined brass music in churches, courts, and public life.
After intermission, the Galliard String Quartet takes the stage for Haydn’s beloved “Lark” Quartet, a work known for its soaring melodies, elegance, and charm. The evening concludes with Osvaldo Golijov’s Tenebrae, a powerful contemporary meditation whose luminous textures and quiet intensity offer a moving and reflective close to the concert.
Spanning more than three centuries, this program highlights the timeless ability of chamber music to inspire, connect, and resonate with audiences today.

Galliard String Quartet
Fueled by passion—and sometimes coffee and tea—the Galliard String Quartet’s romance with the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Shostakovich, and many others is unparalleled. Founded in 1982, the Galliard is renowned throughout the islands for its uncompromising commitment to performing classical and modern music of the highest caliber. All four current members of the Galliard Quartet are also members of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and are experienced teachers and music educators in the community. The Galliard’s 1995 album “Songs of Lili’uokalani” pays respectful homage to Hawaiian musical history through modern arrangements of the Queen’s compositions by Robert Cazimero, Angel Pena, Byron Yasui, and other local composers. Recent highlights include collaborations with acclaimed pianists Joyce Yang, Wu Han, and Billy Childs; Hawaiian vocal artist Raiatea Helm; local composers Michael Thomas Foumai, Takuma Itoh, Leilehua Lanzilotti, and Jon Magnussen; and silent film historian Rick Benjamin.
Honolulu Brass Quintet
Since its inception in 1976, the Honolulu Brass Quintet (HBQ) has performed throughout Honolulu and the state of Hawai‘i. As one of three resident ensembles regularly presented by Chamber Music Hawai‘i, HBQ offers full-length brass performances in premier venues across its home island of O‘ahu, performing regularly at the Doris Duke Theatre and Blue Note Hawaii in Honolulu, as well as the Palikū Theatre on the Windward side of O‘ahu.
Renowned for its versatility, HBQ performs throughout the state for a wide range of audiences in different formats outside of the concert hall, such as free public performances at libraries and community centers, education and church services, and for private parties. In recent seasons, the quintet has been honored to perform for the Hawai‘i Concert Society in Hilo and at the St. Damien of Moloka‘i Church. HBQ regularly performs educational shows throughout Kaua‘i, Lana‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i, O‘ahu, and most recently served a residency at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
The members of the quintet are all full-time professional musicians, performing regularly with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and Royal Hawaiian Band, in addition to teaching privately through the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, BYU Hawai‘i, Punahou and ‘Iolani. This unique combination of talents guarantees the highest level of musical artistry, enriching the musical life of Hawai‘i through HBQ’s dynamic performances and unwavering commitment to the arts.
